In China’s Guizhou province, the Goupitan ship lift has emerged as the world’s largest shiplift, a groundbreaking engineering achievement. This ship lift offers an innovative solution, revolutionizing the transportation of ships with a displacement of up to 500 tons to a remarkable height of 199 meters (653 feet).
Situated within the Goupitan Hydropower Station. In 2021, the completion of this remarkable engineering feat was achieved, consisting of three interconnected hydraulic lifts linked by navigable water channels spanning a total distance of 2.3 kilometers.
The Goupitan ship lift is located on the Wu River, a tributary of the mighty Yangtze River in Guizhou. And is a testament to technological advancement. And also simplifying shipping along this challenging waterway.
Each of the three components that constitute the Goupitan ship lift complex boasts a substantial lifting capacity of 1,800 tons and operates at a lifting speed of 8 meters per minute. To optimize the efficiency of boat transportation and mitigate the risk of congestion. And the Changjiang Institute of Survey divided the system into three stages. As one ship proceeds beyond the first lift. Simultaneous lifting of another ensures a smooth flow through the second and third elevators.
Two rows of hoist cable drums equip these elevators, with gearboxes strategically positioned on both sides of the boat-lifting reservoir. Also this innovative design enables a remarkable hoisting speed of approximately 8 meters per minute. And allowing for the swift elevation or descent of a 500-tonne vessel (roughly the average weight of passenger boats) in just 10 minutes. Previously, the title of the ‘largest shiplift’ was held by the Three Gorges hydroelectric complex in China. And which, while remarkable in its own right, was 14 meters shorter than the towering Goupitan shoplift.
